A hands-on, genre-based approach grounded in social justice.

Doctoral level academic writing is the language of power in higher education, and can be considered a specific genre of writing. All genres have particular purposes and patterns of language that help fulfill those purposes. This means that powerful doctoral-level academic writing begins with learning what those purposes and patterns are.

Clip: Examining the purposes of the issue or problem statement

In this clip, I introduce the purposes of the issue or problem statement, which is typically found in the introduction of doctoral-level academic texts. After introducing the four goals, I have participants identify each purpose in a sample problem statement one at a time, discussing each purpose in the context of the example before going on to the next.
